• In 2007, Sagarika Chakraborty entered into matrimony with geophysicist Anurup Bhattacharya before relocating to Norway. Their eldest offspring, Abhigyaan, came into the world the subsequent year and exhibited indications of autism at an early stage. Recognizing the need for specialized attention, particularly with Sagarika expecting their second child, Aishwarya, the family decided to enroll Abhigyaan in a family kindergarten program in 2010.

My husband and I were completely unaware of their thoughts and plans. We never anticipated this outcome. No one ever informed us that there was an issue with us or that the CWS had the authority to take our children away. We were aware of the counseling and observation part of the Marte Meo program, and we willingly agreed to it for the benefit of our son. However, I distinctly remember requesting to reschedule or cancel the home visits, and I was informed that it was not possible. Even on days when I was unwell, they insisted on coming. It made me extremely uncomfortable because I wanted to be alone with my baby and rest while they were there, but they would just sit and observe, constantly jotting things down in their files. Some days, I felt overwhelmed and unsure of what to do.

 • In 2011, Aishwarya and Abhigyaan were taken away from their parents by Barnevernet, the Norwegian Child Welfare Services, and placed in foster care until they reached the age of 18. The parents had been closely monitored by Barnevernet for several months due to accusations of “inadequate parenting”. This incident brought immense sorrow and hardship to the family.

“On May 9, 2011, just two days before my children were removed by the CWS, I took my daughter to the health station for her vaccinations. She received injections in both legs and experienced pain and fever as a result. These two nights were sleepless for me and my husband, who was also exhausted. Despite this, I still went to the kindergarten for my son’s sake, hoping that once I picked him up, our whole family could finally relax.

During this time, the CWS personnel insisted on coming to our home again. Due to my lack of sleep and high stress levels, I didn’t want anyone at home and tried explaining the situation to them – the vaccinations, the pain, the fever, and our sleepless nights. However, they persisted in coming over. I began preparing breakfast while they bombarded us with questions about our household duties and responsibilities. I told them that it wasn’t the right time to ask us such things, as we desperately needed rest and had unfinished household tasks to attend to.

Suddenly, one of the officers took my daughter out of the house, claiming they would take her for a walk outside since I seemed tired. While my husband and I continued with our chores, we anxiously waited for our child to be brought back. After about an hour, we were informed that our children had been taken to a care home and we wouldn’t be allowed to see them. [Pause] … I am at a loss for words… I can’t express what I felt… I remember crying, becoming hysterical, and shouting, questioning how they could do such a thing… But my pleas fell on deaf ears. Later, I learned that they had labeled my behavior as hysterical and used it as further evidence of my supposed unsuitability as a mother. Can you imagine how you would react if your children were taken away from you?”

The Norwegian foster family of the children.

 • Norwegian authorities claimed that a couple was practicing inappropriate parenting methods, including sharing a bed with their children, hand-feeding (which Norwegian authorities perceived as force-feeding), and using corporal punishment (where Sagarika supposedly slapped the children on one occasion). Although these practices may be deemed acceptable in Indian culture, Norwegian authorities deemed them unacceptable.
After my daughter was born, me and my husband were sleeping in two different rooms. My husband used to sleep with my son and I used to sleep with my daughter. You know, little babies keep getting up in the night to feed so we thought that this is the best for all of us. I think now that the CWS thought it was wrong for us to do this. That it was wrong for me to sleep with my baby. I just cannot understand why they would think that. Many times, I could see them frowning at me, but they never said anything. Like when I was preparing food, I could see they did not approve of what I was cooking, and when I was feeding the children also, I think they made many notes about that. I know later they did say that I used to feed the children with my hand, and I think they said that is wrong. I think they found faults with most of the things I did. As a child, my son did not play with many toys, and when he was a baby and I used to be cooking, I used to let him play with the utensils in the kitchen. This is something we all do in our families. I think this also became a point of complaint about me, they felt a child should play with toys and not kitchen utensils. I did sometimes get angry with him and would threaten him by raising my hand, but that was only a threat. I would raise my voice only when there was something unsafe like a hot surface. I would want to prevent him from getting hurt. I think they put me down as an abusive mother, and I cannot understand how they came to that conclusion.
