Some Lesser Known Facts About Rema

Rema, a Nigerian artist, gained fame in 2019 with his hit song Dumebi. The talented musician openly shared that his passion for singing and rapping blossomed during his school years.

At a young age, Rema embarked on his singing journey. It was at the Christ of Mercy church alongside Alpha P. where he discovered his true abilities through a program called “Rap Nation.” This initiative aimed to teach children the art of rapping for the congregation, and it was here that Rema recognized his immense potential.

Rema received a smartphone from the church members when he was only 14 years old. He utilized this device to download music and hone his freestyle skills by practicing on it.

In February 2018, D’Prince stumbled upon Rema after a video of him showcasing his freestyling skills on D’Prince’s track “Gucci Gang” went viral. Impressed by his talent, D’Prince promptly brought Rema to Lagos and welcomed him into the Mavin Records family.

In 2008, tragedy struck when his father unexpectedly passed away in a hotel room at Bins Hotel in Benin City. Shortly thereafter, his brother also departed from this world. Rema, who was only 15 years old at the time, was forced to assume the responsibility of providing support and strength for his family.

Despite receiving little support from his teammates, his song Iron Man experienced a surge in popularity when US President Barack Obama revealed that it had become a regular addition to his daily playlist.

Rema stood up for his fellow activists in the #endSARS movement, voicing his support against the unjust killing of an unarmed man and musician, Daniel Chibuike (known as Sleek), by a SARS officer in Nigeria.
