Some Lesser Known Facts About Inspector Avinash Mishra

Avinash Mishra, a retired police officer of the Uttar Pradesh Police from the 1982 batch, gained recognition for his involvement in over 150 encounters with notorious criminals. His name became widely known in May 2023 following the premiere of the web series “Inspector Avinash,” which depicts Mishra’s life and experiences as a dedicated cop.

Avinash pursued his master’s degree in P.Ed to advance his passion for the sports field, as stated by him.

Avinash disregarded his father’s disapproval and went ahead to complete the paperwork for the Provincial Civil Services (PCS) exams administered by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC). Remarkably, he successfully passed the exams.

Mishra joined the U.P. Police Academy in Moradabad in 1982. After successfully completing his training in 1985, he was commissioned as an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI).

In Mishra’s initial assignment in Meerut, he gained recognition by successfully confronting three notorious gangsters within his first year on duty.

Mishra was transferred from Mhow to Lucknow in 1998, where he teamed up with a select group of police officers to form the Special Task Force (STF). Their main objective was to apprehend the notorious criminal Prakash Shukla.

After receiving reliable information about Shukla’s whereabouts, he later led the STF to Nepal. However, despite their efforts, Shukla managed to elude the STF and fled to Bihar. Mishra explained during an interview that they had received a tip-off and traveled to Nepal in an attempt to apprehend him. Regrettably, the Nepalese police intervened, enabling Shukla to escape. Similarly, there was another chance to capture him in Bihar, but the strained relations between the governments of UP and Bihar hindered their operation.

On 11 September 1998, he led the STF to Delhi where they came face to face with Munna Bajrangi, a notorious gangster. According to the STF, Munna was fatally shot multiple times and died in the line of duty. However, the STF’s version of events was later discredited by the mortuary staff, who revealed that Munna had actually survived the encounter and was not deceased. Mishra, while being interviewed, expressed deep embarrassment over the situation. He stated, “It was an incredibly humiliating turn of events. After publicly announcing his death, we were now confronted with the sudden revelation that he was actually alive. This only further reinforces the saying, ‘No one can harm what is protected by fate.'”

Additionally, Pandey had an arrest warrant issued against him for the murder of Vivek Srivastava, a businessman from Uttar Pradesh, as well as the brazen armed robbery that took place in broad daylight at a clothing store in Aminabad.

Later on, he assumed leadership of the STF and confronted numerous notorious criminals such as Sachin Pahadi, Awadhesh Shukla, Ashok Singh, Mahendra Fauji, Nirbhay Gurjar, and Hasan Pudia.

Mishra worked at the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of the UP Police from 2009 until 2018.

In 2019, Mishra bid farewell to his active duty as a deputy superintendent of police. Avinash Mishra, donning his uniform, stands confidently, prepared for a photo opportunity.
