Sonali was born into a Marathi middle-class family and grew up in a household with strict rules.

Sonali’s childhood was filled with constant travel due to her father’s job in the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). Every 2-3 years, they would move to a new city, leaving Sonali without the opportunity to form lasting friendships.

Despite never considering a career in modeling, fate had different intentions for her. At a fashion show in her college, the designated model for the runway was unable to attend, leading to Sonali being asked to step in. This was a challenging task for her since she had never worn heels before. Fortunately, she exceeded expectations and even claimed the first prize, subsequently opening doors for various modeling opportunities.

During a modelling assignment, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt came across her.

Even though she made her acting debut with Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Naaraaz’ (1994), her second film ‘Aag’ (1994) was actually released before it.

Their initial encounter took place on the sets of ‘Naaraaz’ (1994), where she crossed paths with her future husband who happened to be producing Mahesh Bhatt’s forthcoming film ‘Angaaray’ (1998). At the time, he harbored unrequited feelings for her, but as time went on, their bond grew into a friendship. After a courtship lasting five years, they eventually tied the knot in 2002.

Despite not having many hits, she achieved immense popularity in the late 1990s and managed to secure roles in films alongside top-tier stars and prestigious banners, primarily due to her stunning appearance.

Reports claim that in 2014, she held the title of being the highest-paid TV actor, as she supposedly demanded ₹4 lakh per day for her involvement in Life OK’s show ‘Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh.’

With a lifelong passion for reading, she became an avid reader. In 2015, she published her debut book titled “The Modern Gurukul: My Experiment with Parenting,” where she candidly recounted her journey and obstacles as a new mother.
