Controversies Bullied by the Film Director Subhash Ghai
In an interview, Mahima shared that after the release of her debut Hindi film ‘Pardes’ (1997), the Indian director Subhash Ghai dragged her to the court for violating the terms of the contract. [6]National Herald She said,
“I was bullied by Mr Subhash Ghai. He even took me to the court and wanted me to cancel my first show. It was quite stressful. He sent a message to all the producers that nobody should work with me! If you pick up one of the issues of Trade Guide magazine in 1998 or 1999, there was an ad that he had given which stated that if anybody wanted to work with me, that person would have to contact him. Otherwise, it would be a breach of contract.”
Later, she said that at that time nobody helped her except Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, David Dhawan, and Rajkumar Santoshi. On the other side, when Subhash Ghai was aksed about it he said that he had a good relation with Mahima, and he was shocked with Mahima’s statement.• Holding an Account in Swiss Bank
In 2015, her name was listed among the Indian celebrities who had an account in HSBC, Switzerland. The list was named ‘Swiss Leaks’ and was released by a leading Indian newspaper. She received criticism for it from the audience, but most of the netizens made fun of her for having account in Swiss bank as they could not believe that she would have that much money to save it in Swiss bank. To align with his superstitious belief that all his films with actresses whose names start with ‘M’ are successful, Subhash Ghai named her Mahima, which coincidentally happens to be her cousin’s name as well. This information was reported by The Times of India in an article about the film ‘Pardes’ released in 1997.
  • After being signed by Indian filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma for the Hindi film ‘Satya’ (1998), Mahima discovered that he had begun shooting with another actress without informing her. In an interview, Mahima expressed her disappointment, stating that although she had received the signing amount, Ram Gopal Varma neglected to personally notify her or her manager about the situation. Instead, she learned through the press that filming had commenced without her. Prior to this, Mahima had given interviews confirming her involvement in ‘Satya’ and had even discussed her role with Ram Gopal Varma.
  • In the year 1999, she made appearances in a number of Hindi films such as ‘Daag: The Fire’ and ‘Pyaar Koi Khel Nahin.’
  • In the same year, Mahima’s Hindi film ‘Dil Kya Kare’ was released, starring Ajay Devgn and Kajol. Unfortunately, tragedy struck during the shooting of the film when Mahima was involved in a severe car accident. On the final day of shooting, while traveling to the shooting location in Bangalore, her car was hit by a milk truck coming from the wrong side. The window glass on the back seat, where she was sitting, shattered, causing around 67 small pieces of glass to injure her face. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Mahima shared in an interview that she believed she was on the verge of death and was disappointed that no one offered immediate assistance to get her to the hospital. It was only later, after her arrival at the hospital, that her mother and Ajay Devgn showed up to discuss the situation. During her surgery, doctors removed 67 glass fragments from her body. She had resigned herself to a life without acting and was adjusting to this new reality. Anything that happened after that was considered a blessing from God. After spending a few days in the hospital, she returned to filming for the movie. However, she revealed in an interview that media reporters would visit the set solely to capture pictures of her scarred face. She became emotional when reflecting on a magazine article published by Stardust, expressing her disappointment with their insensitivity during that period. She recalled that during her accident, the reporters intruded onto the set and shamelessly featured her scarred image on the magazine cover, earning her the nickname ‘scarface’. Despite this, Mahima expressed gratitude towards her co-stars and the producers of ‘Dil Kya Kare’, especially Ajay Devgn, who provided her with support and assistance. Ajay, in particular, understood her situation and intervened when the director insisted on capturing close-up shots of her scars. He advocated for more time and understanding, as she was still recovering from the accident. During an interview, Mahima also addressed rumors linking her romantically to Ajay Devgn. She recalled feeling uncomfortable hearing these rumors, especially since Ajay had recently gotten married while they were still working on the unfinished film ‘Dil Kya Kare’.
  • Afterwards, she made several appearances in Hindi films such as ‘Dhadkan’ (2000), ‘Khiladi 420’ (2000), ‘Lajja’ (2001), ‘Dil Hai Tumhaara’ (2002), and ‘LOC Kargil’ (2003). Specifically, ‘Dil Hai Tumhaara’ was released in 2002.
  • Leander Paes, a former Indian tennis player, was in a relationship with Mahima in 2000. However, they separated in 2003 when Mahima caught him talking on the phone with Rhea Pillai, an Indian model who was married to Sanjay Dutt at the time. During an interview, Mahima revealed that she was not surprised by his involvement with someone else. His departure had no impact on her life; instead, it contributed to her personal growth and maturity. She also expressed her belief that he treated Rhea (Pillai) in a similar unfair manner, despite his success in tennis.
  • After three years since her breakup, Mahima got married to Bobby Mukherjee, who was previously married to Aparna. However, the ongoing legal battle between Bobby and Aparna started causing problems in Mahima and Bobby’s married life. The stress from this situation led to multiple miscarriages for Mahima, ultimately leading to their separation and subsequent divorce. During an interview discussing the divorce, Mahima revealed that she chose not to inform her parents or loved ones about her struggles because she believed it was just one problem after another. Unfortunately, she experienced another miscarriage while hoping for another child, attributing it to her dissatisfaction with the environment she was in. Whenever she had to attend an event or perform, she would leave her child at her mother’s house, often staying there for extended periods as she felt more comfortable there. This time was particularly challenging for Mahima as she heavily relied on others, eventually having to move back in with her parents, placing a significant burden on them. This occurred at a difficult time when her mother was diagnosed with an illness and needed assistance, making it harder for her to help raise Mahima’s child. Consequently, when she went to work, it felt like leaving a toddler and a mother who needed support, forcing her to depend entirely on her staff. Meanwhile, her father had to live in Darjeeling, and her sister, who was also a single parent, joined her in raising their children together. As a single mother, Mahima prioritized earning money, which made it challenging to pursue acting in films due to the time commitment. Instead, she turned to judging television shows and making appearances at events, which provided quick and decent income. In hindsight, Mahima realizes that these assignments ultimately harmed her career as an actress.
