- After obtaining his BCom degree, he became a member of a theatre troupe based in Hyderabad, India. In addition, he took on various odd jobs such as selling mobile plans for Idea Cellular, marketing petrol cards for Bharat Petroleum, and working night shifts at a call center. However, he soon realized that he had a strong desire to pursue a career in acting and that a traditional 9-5 job would not satisfy his aspirations. During an interview, he expressed his passion for acting by sharing how he dedicated Sundays to movie marathons at home and spent the rest of his time engrossed in his extensive collection of 500 comic books. It was on one such Sunday that he witnessed a friend’s remarkable talent for imitating characters from the movie Vaastav (1999). Intrigued and inspired, he decided to imitate his friend’s imitation, unintentionally transforming into a copy of a copy, much like the popular Instagram account diet Sabyasachi, which exposes counterfeit designer wear.
- In 2005, he applied to the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. Despite getting selected, his family was not pleased with his decision. Seizing an opportunity when his father was away on a business trip, he made the bold move to join FTII in Pune. Reflecting on those days in an interview, he expressed his gratitude for being accepted into FTII and shared how, after some persuasion, his mother finally agreed to let him go. However, concerned about his father’s disapproval, he hastily packed his bags and left for FTII without informing him. Fortunately, a kind friend provided him with some money for his expenses.<br><br>Just as he was about to leave home, he mustered the courage to call his father and informed him about his decision to pursue acting at FTII. To his surprise, his father responded curtly, saying, “Leave before I arrive,” making it clear that he disapproved. Undeterred, he boarded a train to Pune, where FTII is located.<br><br>Although his father initially expressed discontent with his chosen path, he continued to provide financial support. It was only when an article about him was published in a newspaper his father had faithfully read for two decades that things started to change. This publication’s endorsement convinced his father that if they were writing about him, his pursuits must be true and worthwhile.
- Vijay also mentioned that during that period, his friend Vijay Ramnani extended financial support to him. Eventually, his father started assisting him financially. Throughout his time at FTII, Vijay would isolate himself in his room and utilize his Philips DVD player to watch movies. He would keenly observe the actors’ performances in these films.
