- From a young age, Shreya had a strong passion for music. Unfortunately, due to her deep voice, finding a suitable music teacher proved to be a challenge. Additionally, she took matters into her own hands and learned western vocals by watching online videos. The photograph captures a precious moment from Shreya Lenka’s childhood, reflecting her unwavering determination to pursue her musical dreams.
- Shreya has been involved in dance since she was in kindergarten, but it wasn’t until 2016 that she started taking her lessons seriously. She spent a year and a half training in Odissi, but eventually had to quit due to the high cost of the lessons. Her first dance mentor was Madan Mohan Purty, who won the BoogieWoogie Hip Hop competition in 2009. When her father was transferred to Jharsuguda, she began learning dance at Mendo Barla’s renowned dance studio. Currently, in 2022, Shreya is focusing on training in freestyle, hip-hop, and contemporary dance styles under the guidance of Mendo Barla.
- Shreya has not only participated in numerous dance competitions but emerged victorious in all of them. Now, Shreya Lenka proudly displays her collection of awards from these dance competitions.
- Shreya’s passion for dancing was always encouraged by her supportive parents, who described her as a dedicated and determined girl. They mentioned that she would attend dance lessons right after school, at 2.30 pm, and wouldn’t return home until 9 pm.
- During an interview, Shreya’s mother revealed her own unfulfilled desire to pursue dancing, hindered by her father’s disapproval. However, she expressed her happiness in witnessing her daughter, Shreya, passionately chase after her own dreams, uncertain of whether she would join the esteemed Blackswan group.
- After being introduced to the South Korean boyband Exo’s song ‘Growl’ by one of her friends, Shreya developed a newfound interest in Kpop. Intrigued, she started exploring other artists like PSY, Rania, BTS, and Blackpink. Inspired by their performances, Shreya began imitating their dance moves and harboring dreams of becoming an idol herself.
- In 2021, her friend suggested that she should try out for online Kpop auditions. Taking the advice, she embarked on a journey of auditioning for various Kpop companies while also actively following them on social media. Additionally, she immersed herself in the world of Kpop by regularly watching vloggers who discussed the genre.
- After completing class 10 in 2021, she made the decision to leave school and take a one-year break from her studies. Throughout this gap year, she dedicated her time to improving her vocal skills, refining her English pronunciation through listening to English songs, and enhancing her knowledge of the Korean language. Additionally, she actively participated in auditions for various entertainment companies in South Korea. Concurrently, she established her own YouTube channel named Shreya Lenka Dance, where she regularly shared her dance performances and song covers. Her channel has garnered a substantial following of 19.7K subscribers.
- Despite facing multiple rejections, she persevered and auditioned for numerous companies. However, due to the closure of dance studios during the first lockdown in India, she improvised and shot her audition at her aunt’s yoga studio. Although she didn’t succeed in securing a role, she received encouraging feedback that she used as motivation to persist through future rejections. During an interview, she shared her approach of closely studying audition videos to continuously improve herself.
- She came across the global auditions for the Kpop girl group Blackswan’s fifth member, hosted by DR Music, and decided to apply. Blackswan, a South Korean girl group, was formed after a rebranding of DR Music’s previous group ‘Rania.’ In October 2020, Blackswan made their debut with three former Rania members, Youngheun, Leia, and Hyeme, along with two new members, Judy and Fatou. However, controversy arose when allegations of Hyeme’s involvement in a 50 million KRW scam (approximately US$44,800) surfaced on November 9, 2020. As a result, DR Music confirmed that Hyeme would be leaving the group due to the completion of her contract and the scamming allegations. On May 10, 2021, DR Music announced that they would be conducting global auditions to find a new member for Blackswan.
- After the global auditions were announced, she decided to audition. She prepared and sent song and dance videos for the first round. In July, she successfully made it through the first round, along with 22 other participants out of the 4000 applicants from around the world. During an interview, she shared her experience, saying that when her name was called after eighteen other girls, she felt a strong determination to dedicate herself to practicing relentlessly in order to secure the top spot. Finding the perfect song was a challenging task, but she recorded several options and shared them with her teacher, even though he wasn’t familiar with English songs and K-pop. Surprisingly, her teacher acknowledged the quality of one of her songs, which gave her confidence to trust his judgment and submit it to DR Music.
- Due to a partial lockdown, Shreya had to film her audition video in a public setting, adhering to safety protocols since the studios were closed. Out of the shortlisted candidates, Shreya was chosen as one of the four individuals moving forward to the next round. Eventually, two candidates decided to withdraw, leaving Shreya Gabriela Dalcin as the sole contender from Brazil in the race to become the fifth member of Blackswan. In December 2021, Shreya embarked on a six-month training program at DR Music in South Korea.

Recognizing the positive impact of yoga asanas on her body language and flexibility, she decided to intensify her practice. Additionally, being inclined towards the creative field, Shreya found even more motivation when her family acknowledged the potential for a career in yoga. This encouragement propelled her to invest more effort into her yoga journey.
- Shreya Lenka’s Instagram story exhibits her exceptional talent for sketching and creating mesmerizing mandala art during her free time.
- Shreya could potentially become the third Indian Kpop idol if she joins Blackswan. The first two individuals to achieve this feat are Sid, also known as Siddhant Arora from Uttar Pradesh, and Priyanka Mazumdar from Assam. Sid was previously a member of the Z-Pop group, Z-Boys, while Priyanka belongs to the female group, Z-Girls, which is the counterpart to Z-Boys. Both Sid and Priyanka gained their Kpop recognition through their participation in the talent hunt show, Z POP, which aims to promote Kpop in Asia.
