  • Mary Kom, hailing from the Kom tribal community in the northeastern state of Manipur, is a celebrated Indian boxer.
  • Her parents worked on Jhum cultivation, and she grew up in a poor family.
  • Mary Kom studied at the village school until the 8th standard. Subsequently, she relocated to Imphal for her 9th and 10th standards. Nevertheless, after failing her exams, she chose to discontinue her schooling and opted to privately take her 10th exams. Throughout her time in school, she was recognized as Mary Kom.
  • Having excelled in sports since her early years, she found inspiration in the Indian boxer Dingko Singh. It was at the age of 15 when she made the firm decision to embark on a career in boxing.
