Some Lesser Known Facts About Asim Munir
- On 29 November 2022, Asim Munir took over as the 11th Chief of the Army Staff of Pakistan, succeeding General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
- During his training at Officers Training School (OTS) in Mangla, Asim Munir joined the 17th Officers Training Course. Upon successfully completing the program in 1986, he was appointed as a Second Lieutenant in the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment. - Following his promotion to major, Asim Munir assumed the role of Brigade Major (BM) in an infantry brigade of the Pakistan Army.
- Afterwards, Asim received a new assignment as a General Staff Officer-II (GSO-II) in a different infantry brigade.
- Asim was honored with the title of “Hafiz-e-Quran” during his time as a Lieutenant Colonel in Medina, Saudi Arabia, for his remarkable feat of memorizing the Islamic holy book Quran.
- After being promoted to Colonel, Asim took command of his unit, the 23 Frontier Force.

During his tenure as the DG of ISI, Asim oversaw the unfortunate attack on CRPF in Pulwama in February 2019, which resulted in the tragic loss of 40 soldiers’ lives. Following Asim’s departure, Lt Gen Faiz Hameed took over the position.

- On November 24, 2022, Lt Gen Asim Munir was appointed as the 11th Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) by the President of Pakistan. The President’s office issued a notification stating that Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza has been promoted to the position of General and designated as the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff committee. These promotions and appointments were made in accordance with the relevant articles and sections of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Pakistan Army Act 1952. President Alvi took a photo with Asim Munir to commemorate the occasion. Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) responded to the appointment by emphasizing the importance of the Pakistan Army prioritizing external threats and staying out of domestic politics. The PTI expressed hope that the new leadership of the armed forces will uphold constitutional rights, promote democracy, and respect the people’s right to elect new leadership through fair elections. They also expressed trust that the armed forces will not interfere in political matters and that Asim Munir’s appointment will not infringe on the rights of political parties. Asim Munir’s retirement from the Pakistan Army was originally scheduled for November 27, 2022, but was postponed due to his candidacy for the position of Army Chief, along with six other contenders. It is worth noting that Munir is the first Army Chief in Pakistan to have held the positions of both DGMI and DG ISI, and he is also the first COAS to receive the prestigious Sword of Honour during the passing out parade at OTS, Mangla.
