Some Lesser Known Facts About Shaheen Afridi
- Shaheen Afridi, a young and fierce Pakistani fast bowler, is a key member of the Pakistan Cricket Team in international matches. With his impressive skillset, Afridi consistently bowls at high-140s (kmph) speeds, making him a formidable force on the field.
- Shaheen’s childhood was spent playing tennis ball cricket in the rough hills of Landi Kotal, a tribal region that borders Afghanistan. He was born into the Zakhakhel Afridi tribe, a prominent Pashtun community and the largest Afridi tribe in the Khyber Agency district of Peshawar, Pakistan. Shaheen’s preferred playground was the Tatara Ground in Landi Kotal, famous for its challenging and uneven landscape, as depicted in the aerial view image.
- Shaheen’s passion for cricket stemmed from his older brother, Riaz, who represented Pakistan in a test match back in 2004. It was Riaz who recognized Shaheen’s talent as a fast bowler and mentored him in the basics of this style of bowling. With Riaz’s guidance, Shaheen took part in his first-ever selection trial for the under-16 regional cricket team of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Despite having only played tennis ball cricket up until that point, the 15-year-old Shaheen adapted quickly to bowling with a hardball and effortlessly cleared the trials, earning a spot in the FATA under-16 cricket team. During the trial, Shaheen had to rely on clothing and accessories borrowed from his brother. In 2015, Shaheen Afridi made his debut appearance in a cricket selection trial.
- After being chosen for the FATA team, Shaheen’s exceptional performance in the PCB’s regional under-16 tournament earned him the title of the highest wicket-taker with 12 wickets. This remarkable achievement paved the way for his participation in an under-16 international cricket series against Australia.
- After consistently wowing spectators with his exceptional skills on the field, the towering speedster managed to leave a lasting impression in nearly every local competition he participated in. It didn’t take long for him to rise through the ranks and secure a spot on the Pakistan National Team in 2018, an astonishing achievement considering he had only been introduced to professional cricket a mere three years prior.
- At the tender age of 16, Shaheen Afridi was handpicked to represent the Pakistan under-19 cricket team, even prior to his first-class cricket debut.
- Yasir Afridi, cousin of Shaheen Afridi, is a professional Pakistani footballer who represented the Pakistan national football team in the 2010 Asian Games.
- Shaheen Afridi’s childhood is captured in a rare photograph, revealing his intriguing passion for both cricket and football.
- Shaheen Afridi’s parents reportedly reached out to former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi in March 2021, seeking his daughter Aqsa’s hand in marriage. Shahid Afridi publicly confirmed his agreement on Twitter, and both families have consented to the union. It is worth noting that Aqsa Afridi is Shahid Afridi’s own daughter and is said to be of the same age as Shaheen.
- Shaheen Afridi, a renowned fast bowler in international cricket, nearly gave up on the sport a year before his international debut in 2017. After experiencing a string of poor performances for Lahore Qalander in the 2017 Pakistan Super League, Shaheen contemplated retiring from cricket. However, he ultimately changed his mind. In a 2020 interview with Cricket Pakistan, former Pakistani fast bowler Aaqib Javed disclosed this information. He stated that Shaheen made his debut for the Qalandars team at just 17 years old. Initially, he struggled and even expressed his desire to quit cricket in order to repay the Qalandars’ owners for their investment in him. Nevertheless, I reassured him that everyone has off days and recognized his potential to become a superstar. To give him a break and boost his confidence, we decided to keep him out of a few matches but brought him back for a game against Multan, where he impressively took five wickets. This experience taught me the significance of believing in talent and providing opportunities for them to excel. Shaheen Afridi exhibited his exceptional skills in an exhilarating PSL match.
