Some Lesser Known Facts About Mohammed Shami
- During his teenage years, Mohammed Shami, a dedicated learner, would arrive at his training venue an hour before schedule. He would take the initiative to set up his own nets and engage in intense practice for several hours.
- It is interesting to note that all three of Shami’s real brothers had a childhood aspiration to become fast bowlers.
- Shami credits his father Tousif Ali for his success. He believes that his father was the sole individual who recognized his true talent as a bowler and encouraged him to pursue the sport.
- Having witnessed Shami’s exceptional potential, his father wasted no time in introducing him to the local cricket coach, Badruddin Siddique. In an interview, Badruddin shared, “The moment I saw him bowling at the nets as a 15-year-old, I knew this young boy was extraordinary. Hence, I made the decision to mentor him. Over the course of a year, I diligently prepared him for the UP trials since we lacked club cricket opportunities in our area. Shami proved to be highly cooperative, punctual, and dedicated. Not once did he skip a training session. Although he performed exceptionally well during the under 19 trials, he unfortunately missed out on selection due to political factors. They requested that I bring him back the following year, but I didn’t want Shami to lose an entire year of progress. Therefore, I advised his parents to send him to Kolkata.”
- During his time in Kolkata, Shami joined the Dalhousie Athletic Club, where he caught the attention of Debabrata Das, a former assistant secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal. Impressed by Shami’s bowling skills, Das subsequently recruited him for his own team called Town Club, offering him a payment of INR 75,000. As Shami had no place to stay in Kolkata at that time in 2005, Das kindly provided him temporary shelter in his own residence.

By practicing with these specially prepared balls, Shami honed his ability to achieve the desired reverse swing.
- Upon his debut for India, Shami was initially recognized as Shami Ahmed. However, it was subsequently revealed that his true name is Mohammed Shami. During an interview with a newspaper, Shami clarified the matter, stating, “I am Mohammed Shami, not Shami Ahmed. I am unsure how that additional surname got attached.”
