Controversies | • During the 2014 LokSabha elections, Gautam was accused of supporting the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi in his compaigns by providing chartered planes for the rallies and protests.
• On 24 January 2023, Hindenburg Research, a US based investment research firm, released a 106-paged report making serious allegations against the Adani Group. The report accused the Adani Group of engaging in brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud with the claimed value of these schemes totaling Rs. 17.8 trillion (equivalent to US$ 218 billion) spanning several decades. Moreover, the report asserted that the Adani family controlled offshore shell entities located in tax havens across the Caribbean, Mauritius, and the United Arab Emirates. According to the report, these offshore entities were allegedly used to facilitate corruption, money laundering, and taxpayer theft, all while siphoning funds away from the group’s publicly traded companies. In March 2023, the Supreme Court appointed a committee to investigate the matter, and it also instructed Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to provide a report on the situation; however, an affidavit was later submitted in response to SEBI’s report, alleging that SEBI itself was implicated in the case and had made amendments to the SEBI Act in favor of Adani. In September 2023, the Supreme Court of India determined that a conflict of interest existed within SEBI as one of its members had a close connection to the Adani family. [1]India Today |
